Optional Activities

The following are “optional” activities available to you during “San Francisco & 20th Century Design.” You may participate in none, some, or all of the activities—the choice is yours. [Note that our preliminary survey did not demonstrate enough interest in the Thai cooking class to meet the 12 person minimum.]

Some events require prepayment to guarantee your reservation. Other events may require a “deposit” to hold your place; this will be fully refunded to you, in cash, at the time of the event. If you fail to show for the event your deposit will be forfeited--and the rest of the group will spend your money!

All reservations, fees, and deposits must be paid by Tuesday, April 6. Note that tax (almost 10%) and gratuity (usually 20%) add significantly to the total cost of the prepaid meals. Registration and payment will be via PayPal. Please plan ahead; most of the venues require an exact count several weeks in advance. As a result, it is unlikely we will be able to add participants during the week of the tour.

Pied Piper Bar at The Palace Hotel

Sunday, April 18 • 7:00-9:00pm

If you’re free the evening before the “official” start of the tour, join us for “non-hosted” cocktails at this historic cocktail lounge. The backdrop is the famous Pied Piper mural by Maxfield Parish. It’s a short walk from the Galleria Park Hotel at 2 New Montgomery St. (at Market St.) www.sfpalace.com

No deposit or fee but please email or call to indicate if you will be joining us.

Late night run to Ghirardelli’s for a hot fudge sundae

Tuesday, April 20 • 8:30pm

We’ll meet in the Galleria Park Hotel lobby and then take the Hyde Street cable car to Ghirardelli Square. What could be more San Francisco?

$10 deposit to hold your place. Pay Here.

Bourbon & Branch (former Speakeasy!)

Wednesday, April 21 • 9:00pm

Yes, this is the real deal—a former Prohibition-Era speakeasy that now serves old-school, hand-crafted, premium cocktails. Of course, the sign outside is incorrect and there are no windows--just a plain, solid door and an intercom to “say the password.” Think Premium liquors, hand squeezed juices, homemade mixers, etc. We’ll meet in the Galleria Park Hotel lobby; it’s about a 15 minute walk. Their web site is appropriately vague; you’ll notice that no address is listed. [Don’t worry, Mick knows the secret password and the location] www.bourbonandbranch.com

$20 deposit to hold your place. Pay Here.

Chinese Banquet at Yank Sing

Thursday, April 22 • 2:00pm

Following our morning in Oakland, you have an opportunity to dine at one of the finest Chinese Restaurants in San Francisco. They specialize in Dim Sum, and our banquet will include many of their famous dumplings:

  • Supreme Shanghai Dumpling
  • Wonton Soup
  • Peking Duck
  • Potsticker
  • Spring Roll
  • Shrimp Dumpling
  • Snow Pea Dumpling
  • Shitake Purse
  • Black Pepper Sizzling Beef Noodles
  • Seasonal Fresh Fruit
  • Jasmine Tea

Note that the meal intentionally does not include rice, considered to be “too ordinary” for a banquet of this caliber…so please don’t ask!

Wendy’s Thrift Store Shopping

Thursday, April 22 • 3:30pm

Our friend Wendy is an expert at thrift store shopping. She’ll be joining us at Yank Sing. Following lunch, she will take those interested to a few of her favorite places.

No fee or deposit, but please indicate if you will be joining Wendy. There may be costs for public transportation.
